INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Indoor air is a mixture of outdoor air combined with particles and gaseous contaminants released by various occupant activities and environmental reservoirs. These particle contaminants include cigarette smoke, cooking and heating fuel, household “allergen-producing” spry particles and in-home pets, and microbial toxins, including fungi. Gaseous pollutants contributing to poor indoor air quality are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur and nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, ozone, microbial and other volatile organic compounds, and radon. Health effects associated can be infectious, such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis and/or toxic, such as asphyxiation. Control of air quality depends on a number of factors such as proper ventilation and source elimination.
Fortunately, for some of these contaminants there are established exposure limits; however, for others such as biological pollutants there are no set standards available as of yet. For those unspecified contaminants, controls require proper assessments and common sense that emphasize the need for exercising professional judgment.
